Holyoke Jewish community opens Hannukkah season with Menorah lighting
Holyoke Mayor Joshua Garcia said that being a Puerto Rican officiating over a Jewish ceremony is precisely the meaning of Hanukkah. “This not about our differences,” he told a crowd of more than 50 people in front of Holyoke City Hall Sunday evening. “It is the season that unites us all.”
And with that, Garcia joined leaders of the Holyoke Jewish community in celebrating the first of eight nights of Hanukkah with the lighting of the menorah.
