Sinai Temple

What’s in a Torah: What’s in a Jewish Life?

Every year Sinai Temple’s Sixth Grade classes goes on a one-day retreat to begin the exploration of Bar/Bat Mitzvah. The Retreat takes the children out of their “regular” classrooms and away from home so that they can think creatively about the reality of becoming young Jewish adults. The children “play” a huge game of identifying all component parts of the Torah’s story. They then break into creative groups and act out the story of the Torah. Their acting is filmed and later made into a movie for them to enjoy. At one point in the weekend the children unroll a Torah scroll (very carefully) and search for the highlights of the text. Finally, each child receives his or her Torah portion and creates a poster depicting the meaning of the parasha.

It’s a great weekend made possible, in part, by the support of our community through the Jewish Federation..
